The Skin Concerns That Need More Than a Routine
24th Sep 2026

There's a particular kind of client that every skin therapist recognises. She sits down, hands you a bag of products she's tried, and says some version of the same thing: "I've tried everything. Nothing works."
She's been failed by products that promised results and advice that didn't account for the complexity of her skin. Clients dealing with acne, hyperpigmentation, melasma and rosacea carry more than a skin concern into the treatment room. They carry months or years of frustration, self-consciousness, and eroded trust. Understanding that is as important as understanding the clinical picture.
Acne and Problematic Skin
The word "acne" still carries a stigma it doesn't deserve. Clients with acne-prone or problematic skin have often been told that it's their fault - poor diet, not washing their face properly, stress they should manage better. The reality is that problematic skin is driven by a complex mix of hormones, genetics, microbial imbalance, and yes, external factors, but it is never simply a hygiene issue.
Within Nimue's classification system, this client falls under Problematic skin, characterised by congestion, oiliness, breakouts and inflammation. The clinical approach is AHA-based, working to decongest, regulate sebum and rebalance the skin's microbial environment rather than simply drying it out.
This is where many existing routines go wrong. Clients with acne often reach for the harshest products available, stripping the skin in the hope of clearing it. The result is a compromised barrier that becomes more reactive, more inflamed, and harder to treat. The Nimue approach treats the root cause of the concern rather than attacking the surface by supporting cell turnover, reducing bacterial activity, and restoring balance without stripping.

The Purifier range is built specifically for this skin type: a clarifying day and night moisturiser that re-establishes a healthy microbial balance, reduces sebum and calms inflammation, alongside the Purifying Serum which brightens and decongests at a deeper level.
The consultation opportunity here is significant. A client who has lost faith in skincare is often doing so because she has never had her skin properly classified and treated accordingly. Starting with that conversation changes everything.
Hyperpigmentation and Melasma
Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common and most emotionally loaded skin concerns in the treatment room. Dark spots, uneven skintone, post-inflammatory marks, they affect confidence in a way that other skin concerns sometimes don't, because they're visible, persistent, and often resistant to the products clients have tried.
Melasma sits within Nimue's Hyperpigmented classification, alongside other forms of UV-triggered pigmentation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It's important to be honest with clients about what's achievable: melasma in particular cannot be cured, but it can be effectively managed and its appearance significantly improved with the right consistent approach.

The Hyperpigmented classification uses a triple-action approach targeting melanogenesis (the process by which excess melanin is produced) at multiple points. The Fader range addresses this through the Day Fader, Night Fader and Fader Serum, each working to stop melanin transfer, inhibit production and increase radiance. But the most important thing any hyperpigmentation client can do is wear SPF daily, without exception. UV exposure is the primary driver of melanin production. Without daily protection, no treatment or homecare product will hold its results.
For the client who has tried multiple brightening serums and seen little change, the conversation needs to reset expectations around what consistent, classified treatment actually looks like over time, and why SPF is not optional.
Rosacea and Sensitive Skin
Rosacea is frequently misunderstood, both by clients and sometimes by the professionals treating them. It presents as redness and flushing, but beneath the surface it's a condition characterised by chronic inflammation and skin that is significantly more reactive than unaffected skin.
Within Nimue's system, rosacea falls under the Sensitive classification, the one classification that uses PHA rather than AHA, because these clients need the gentlest possible active ingredients. The approach prioritises barrier repair and calming inflammation above all else, using formulations that desensitise and restore comfort rather than stimulate or exfoliate aggressively.

Clients with rosacea are often dealing with years of misdiagnosis, ineffective products, and the social discomfort of a condition that makes them look flushed or inflamed in ways they can't control. The therapist who treats this skin with the correct level of care and sets realistic expectations around management rather than elimination builds exceptional long-term client relationships.
The consultation that makes the difference
The common thread across all of these concerns is this: the clients experiencing them have usually tried things that haven't worked, and they've often been given generic advice rather than treatment built around their specific skin.
Nimue's classification system exists precisely for this reason. Before any product or treatment recommendation, a proper consultation determines exactly which classification applies and the entire regime is built from there.
